A sliding, swing or pedestrian gate should suit both the opening and the way you enter the property. We discuss available space, existing posts and access before working through the layout.
Integrated pedestrian access in a completed sliding gate installation.
Sliding Gates
A gate that travels sideways along the boundary. We look at the opening, side clearance, track layout and ground conditions before working out the arrangement.
Swing Gates
Single or double swing layouts, depending on the available space and access. Opening angles, hinges, gate weight and motor clearance need to be considered together.
Pedestrian Access
A separate pedestrian gate or, where the project allows, an integrated pedestrian opening. The layout and lock options depend on the gate and site.
Automatic Gates
Automation can be fitted to suitable new or existing gates. We discuss the opening, access and control options before selecting an arrangement.
PRODUCT AND COMPONENT REFERENCES
Explore a gate and the parts behind it.
These supplier references help explain appearance and component options. They are separate from our completed projects. Final supply, specifications and suitability are confirmed for your site.
Supplier product reference · Visual reference only
Pressed Spear Steel Gate
A pre-made steel gate reference from the supplier’s commercial range. The listed example is 2100 × 6000 mm. Suitability, opening space, support, finish and automation need to be assessed for the project.
A component reference for a swing gate discussion. The supplier lists several hinge variants sold as a pair. The appropriate hinge and fixing arrangement depend on the gate and existing posts.
A ground-track component reference for suitable sliding gate systems. Track and wheel compatibility, the ground surface and the fixing layout need to be considered together.
This sliding gate includes a pedestrian opening within the panel, with a keypad lock. The photograph shows the lock and decorative ironwork. It gives the owner a walking entrance through the same gate panel.
For your opening, we discuss whether pedestrian access should be separate or integrated, and the lock arrangement that suits the job.
Real ALAN GATE job · Existing swing gate automation
Keep the Gates, Add Automation
This job added remote-control automation to an existing pair of iron swing gates. The existing gates were retained and the equipment was installed and adjusted for operation.
Send photos of the gates, hinges and posts. We need to assess the existing arrangement before confirming whether an automation retrofit is suitable.
Compare material and hardware options alongside our real gate projects. The frame, infill, hinges or sliding hardware need to suit the opening and the way the gate will operate.
Frame and infill
Discuss the frame, appearance and finish around your opening.
The final materials, dimensions, finish, hardware and installation scope are confirmed for your project.
GATE QUESTIONS
Common questions about gates.
Should I choose a sliding gate or a swing gate?
It depends on the space you have. A sliding gate needs clear space beside the opening for the gate to travel along the boundary. A swing gate needs a clear area behind it, without walls or obstructions in the way. Slope and uneven ground also matter. Read our sliding vs swing gate guide.
Can you automate my existing gates?
Often, if the gates are suitable. On one job we added remote-control automation to an existing pair of iron swing gates and kept the original gates. Send photos of the gates, hinges, posts and any current motor so we can assess them. See the automation job.
Can a pedestrian door be built into a sliding gate?
Where the project allows, yes. One of our sliding gates has a pedestrian opening within the panel and a keypad lock, so people can walk in through the same gate. Otherwise a separate pedestrian gate can be added. See the sliding gate job.
What should I send for a gate quote?
The clear width of the opening, your preferred gate height and a photo of the driveway. Also show the space beside the opening (for a sliding gate) or the driveway area behind the gates (for a swing gate), close-ups of any existing hinges, posts or motor, whether you need vehicle access, pedestrian access or both, your suburb, and any slope.
